Based on existing influences: Technology is at the heart of society

In 2019 and 2020, long-ignored issues and inequalities came to the world's attention in ways that could not be ignored。COVID-19 has highlighted the fragility of health systems and the dangers faced by front-line workers who quietly support economies in many countries。The impact of climate change is being made clear by an unprecedented number of weather-related disasters。1 Protests in the United States over the killing of people of color by police quickly grew into a global movement expressing grievances over centuries of racial inequality。The polarization of wealth and politics at national and global levels has become more severe。

The increasing availability of technology helps address such challenges and offers powerful potential solutions。As technologists, we see it as our responsibility to continue to critically evaluate the impact of technology on society, especially marginalized and underserved groups, and to ensure that technology will ultimately contribute to a more equitable future。

Work at the cutting edge of technological and social change requires us to grapple with complex problems and be tolerant of failure。This report will outline the principles and tools that have underpinned our work at the forefront of technological and social change, give examples of how we have translated those principles and tools into action over the past two years, and outline how we can build on that in the future。

As technology becomes more central to society, we believe that the tech industry will play an extremely important role in shaping the future, particularly by challenging some of the existing ways of developing technology。It's very important that we think ethically, fairly and inclusively about the implications of what we do as technologists and constantly ask ourselves what do we want the world to be like。

Our perspective

We fight tirelessly (and sometimes quietly) on behalf of those on the front lines of the battle against climate change and health or social inequality。They understand the difficult and complex issues of the struggle better than we do, and our job is to provide the technology, infrastructure and skills to help them succeed, not to wait and see and throw out off-the-shelf solutions。

Diagram shows our purpose in the centre; Create extraordinary impact on the world through our culture and technology excellence. It is surrounded by five segments, called lenses: Revolutionize the tech industry, advocate for an equitable tech future, foster a diverse community of passionate technologists, acchieve enduring commercial success and sustained growth, be an awesome partner for clients and their ambitious missions. Our values form the outer layer - global first, autonomous teams, courageous, integrity, inclusivity, curiosity, cultivation, pursuit of excellence Diagram shows our purpose in the centre; Create extraordinary impact on the world through our culture and technology excellence. Culture and Values

The scale and multidimensional nature of social problems such as climate change and inequality mean that solutions require a mix of different perspectives and a strong commitment。

In pursuing social change, we rely on a culture that encourages us to imagine and implement innovative solutions to seemingly intractable problems。We have built a company that is defined by empathy, diversity, and radical inclusion, where our employees understand that they are free to be who they are and stand up for causes they believe in without fear, and where leadership is held accountable。

Thoughtworks strongly encourages open dialogue and challenging the status quo。We improve our processes and the products we develop strictly based on feedback。Believing in the collective impact we can have, Thoughtworks employees have become strict stewards of this culture and powerful agents of positive change。

People used to separate their personal values and the impact they wanted to make or see in the world from their employers, but now the two are converging。Based on the facts and the track record, we can say that this is something we've cared about for a long time, that we've invested time and energy into, and that's the real difference。

Way forward: capacity building and international cooperation

Social change is a process that takes years or even decades。We should think of social change as a journey that can only be traveled by continuous efforts to learn and improve。

DEISSC is responsible for ensuring that best practices and successes in one region are replicated elsewhere, enriching the company's knowledge and enhancing our ability to best serve the causes we care about。DEISSC assesses all major initiatives we take on impact, business and strategy from the perspective of diversity, equity, inclusion, sustainability and social change。

The social impact framework Outlines the tools we can use to produce systemic social impact。The framework takes the personal journeys of Thoughtworks employees as its starting point and aims to realize Thoughtworks' vision of responsible technology to make a social impact for the most vulnerable people around the world。

The social change framework: a layered diagram showing Individuals (the personal journey); Thoughtworks and industry (diversity, equity and inclusion); Organizations (tech for social change); Movements (solidarity over charity); and Society (responsible technology) The social change framework: a layered diagram showing Individuals (the personal journey); Thoughtworks and industry (diversity, equity and inclusion); Organizations (tech for social change); Movements (solidarity over charity); and Society (responsible technology)

DEISSC is also responsible for reviewing Thoughtworks' global compliance with frameworks and covenants on these issues, including SASB (Accounting Standards Board for Sustainable Development) standards and The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS)。

While we believe in the importance of the global environmental, social and corporate Governance (ESG) framework and compact, it is our employees and partners who are the primary enablers of our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, sustainability and social change。We see the global compact as a tool to bring people together across the globe to achieve common goals, but we also believe that real social change must be driven by social movements in local communities。

We have been working with UN partners to promote sustainability in many ways through initiatives such as the SustainChainTM platform and with UN Women China on achieving gender equality。The SDG is an ambitious international blueprint for a better future for all, a framework that promises meaningful progress by organising collective action。

We have done meaningful work early on on DEI at the regional level and on sustainability and social change。Today, we consider sustainability, social change and DEI when we develop global strategies to advance our corporate priorities, or when we strive to launch new initiatives, services and specifications at the outset。

Thoughtworks chief Strategy Officer

It goes beyond corporate social responsibility

In joint action with other organizations and global alliances, we apply the data and best practices generated in collaboration with our customers and strive to increase our impact。

However, we believe that the impact is not quantifiable。The nature and systemic effects that bring about change are hard to quantify -- but they are the foundation of lasting change that allows us all to move forward。

We are determined to consider the interests of all involved in our pursuit of business growth and to consider whether we can provide an environment in which passionate, serious and determined people can succeed and give us reason to be optimistic about the future, as well as whether we can make a long-term contribution to a better future。
